When a child or young person comes into care, the Local Authority takes on the parental responsibility for them. Their primary responsibilities include ensuring the child or young person has a place to live and be cared for, access to education and healthcare, and to be kept safe from any harm.
We know the council is fully committed to this cohort of children and young people. However the growing financial pressures they face, which are mirrored nationwide, mean that the ‘added extras’ of access to hobbies, opportunities and experiences is increasingly rare. EPIC was set up to ensure this cohort are not further disadvantaged from their peers through lack of access to opportunities which can make all the difference to their lives. The EPIC Charity - Bristol was established in 2021 by employees of Bristol City Council who between them have lived experiences of the care system as well as passion for developing access to opportunities for children in care and care leavers.
The charity began by providing grants to the Bristol’s care experienced community. We approved and processed many applications to create positive memories that included driving lessons, holidays, days out and hobby memberships.
We continue to approve grants and expand our trustee board by welcoming two new young trustee members. We pride ourselves in our commitment to diversity, striving to ensure our board reflects and represents the children and young people we serve.
We are focusing on expanding EPIC and exploring ways to fund future grants.
